What is LDAP? (Windows Admin Interview Series #2)

LDAP is an Internet standard protocol used by applications to access information in a directory. It runs directly over TCP, and can be used to access a standalone LDAP directory service or to access a directory service that is back-ended by X.500. It was created as a way to minimize the implementation requirements on directory clients, and to simplify and encourage the use of directories among applications.

The LDAP directory service model is based on entries. An entry is a collection of attributes that describing it. Each attribute has a name, type and one or more values. For example, attributes describing a person might include person's name (common name, or cn), telephone number, and email address.

The entry for Peter Chan might have the following attributes:

    cn: Peter Chan
    mail: peter@ust.hk
    telephoneNumber: 2358-1234
    telephoneNumber: 2358-4321
    roomNumber: 2228

LDAP is a protocol defining a directory service and access to that service. LDAP is based on a client-server model. LDAP servers provide the directory service, and LDAP clients use the directory service to access entries and attributes.

What is Active Directory? (Windows Admin interview Series #1)

Active Directory is a hierarchical collection of network resources that can contain users, computers, printers, and other Active Directories. Active Directory Services (ADS) allow administrators to handle and maintain all network resources from a single location. Active Directory is a feature in Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, and is not available to Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Mac OS, Mac OS X, or UNIX client software.

Use Excel Macros to Speed up Work

When you find yourself performing a task or series of tasks repeatedly in a spreadsheet, it's time to create a macro. A macro is a series of commands and functions that are stored in module based on Microsoft Visual Basic® that is attached to a workbook (file). You can run the macro whenever you need to perform the task(s). You will see that a macro will perform tasks very quickly.

In Excel, you can record a macro, which means that Excel records each step you take—that is, each command you choose—as you perform the task. You then run the macro to repeat the commands. Keep in mind that if you make a mistake when you record the macro, the corrections you make are also recorded. After a macro is recorded, you can change and update it by using the Visual Basic Editor.

Think about the tasks that you need to automate when you work with certain types of spreadsheets. For example, you could create a macro that quickly hides a group of monthly columns so that only the summary data shows. You could create another macro to show all of the details again. Another example would be a macro to format cells so that long headings wrap around the cells.

How To:

1. Start Microsoft Excel version 2002, and either open a file in which you need to create a new macro or start from a new spreadsheet.

2. Think through the steps that you want to record in a new macro.

3. When you are ready to create a macro, select Macro from the Tools menu, and then select Record New Macro.

4. Type a name for the new macro. Notice that the first character of the macro name must be a letter and spaces are not allowed. Other characters can be letters, numbers, or underscore characters (which are good to use to represent spaces).

5. Type either a lowercase or capital letter as a way to execute the macro using the keyboard. This will let you run the macro just by typing CTRL+ the letter that you chose.

6. Select where you want the macro to be recorded, such as in the current workbook. However, if you want the macro to be available to all Excel workbooks, select Personal Macro Workbook.

7. If you want to, type a description of the macro in the Description box, and then click OK.

8. Start performing the commands and actions that you want the macro to record.

9. When you are finished, click the Stop Recording button (the blue square) on the Stop Recording toolbar.

10. Whenever you need to perform the macro in the spreadsheet, either press the keyboard shortcut you defined, or select Macro from the Tools menu, and point to Macros. Click the macro that you want to run, and then click Run.

11. To see what the macro commands look like in the Visual Basic Editor, select Macro from the Tools menu, and point to Macros. Click the name of the macro that you want to see, and then click Edit. Close the Visual Basic Editor when you're finished exploring.

NAIL WATCH

The Timex Nail Watch: Get the Time on Your nails

We have seen many different types of futuristic watches with strange shapes and design but none so unique as this. Now lets welcome the Nail watch, that can be worn on the thumb. You may have never seen a watch that can be worn on the thumb but times are going to change thanks to Timex. Timex, in collaboration with Core77, held a global design competition called 2154: the future of time design. So what we are seeing here is the TX54 concept which was a runner up there.

Thanks to a translucent body, the design blends seamlessly with the nail while a selection of text color options and a glow feature activating on command make it supremely functional as well. Press the end of your thumbnail, and the watch will light up for you. A perfect blend of appearance, user interface, and technology, the nail watch passes most standards of modern design with flying colors thanks to its functional and minimalist appeal. The watch looks stylish and chic and has a touch of Geeky style as well. The downside of this watch is that it is disposable. So with so many stylish watched being available now, it will be hard for it to survive in the market. Though it is quite innovative with a minimalist design, but it won't last long on your finger.

No details about the availability or the price of this watch has been released by Timex. But since it is tiny and disposable, I don't expect the price to be high.

SAMSUNG A800 SECRET CODES

The universal unlock code is *2767*637# do this with out your sim in
By default, the firmware (software) for x600 only receives java
apps and other applications like stuff by serial port.
but even for it, you have to enable the serial port, which also
causes
the closing of all other ports, even the IrDA too :-( ..
well, guess what, i have very good news for you,
do you know, you can increase the sound level,
the sound level for tones, speaker fone, etc,
can be increase even then if it is at max (level 4)
you still can do it,
just follows the instructions!

**************** HERE WE GO **************
Enter the following code:
*#8999*8378#
(You'll be shown menu, then ...)
then go to:
"H/W test"
then go to:
"Audio Settings"

then go to:
"Melody Gain"

There will you see a number.
there are five (5) Melody Levels" of it.
(and currently, you are at level 1 and after
pressing the "save" button, you will move to
level 2 and so on .........................)
you have to change the values of all the levels.
and as the resultant, it will give increase the
melody sound!, your tones will more louder,
even more louder then the max. ringing volume.
the level wise numbers are: (as its my setting :-) )

Melody Level 1: 13
Melody Level 2: 17
Melody Level 3: 18
Melody Level 4: 25
Melody Level 5: 31
you even can make your own combinations of level wise
sounding numbers that can change the sound level!.

if your combination cause more louder sound level,
then mine,
then do share it with the group! ... :-)
meanwhile, try my figured-out combination!

************ CAUTION ************
if anything goes wrong,
then you can apply the master reset code,
that will NOT delete anything, ANYTHING from your
cell fone, but set each and eveything to its
default/standard setting ...
(likes, factory settings :-) )
the master reset code is:
#*7728#

#########################################
I take no responsibility of these codes are working or not,
or its effects on your cell fone
but i have tried these codes on my cell fone.
and i bet, nothing goes wrong,
but even then of my words, be carefull!,
#########################################
The code: *#8999*8378#
as i regarded it a informative code,
will tell you each and everything about your cell fone.
and in the "H/W test",
there are lot of other Audio settings,
each of them having five (5) levels,
you can change the combination, but before doing anything,
do write the defult number sequence to some place so that
you'll be then able to invert it again! .. :-) ...
